JOE CLAUSELLのプロフィール
ニューヨークはブルックリン出身のDJ/プロデューサー。本名は、ジョアキン・クラウゼル。ディープ・ハウス・シーンの大御所であり、ジャズやアフリカ音楽との融合を通して深い世界観を表現するスピリチュアル・ハウスのオリジネーターとしても知られている。
デビュー曲は、1992年にインスタント・ハウス名義でリリースした「Awade (Ah-Wa-Day)」。その後も、同名義で「Over」や「Lost Horizon」といったクラブ・ヒットを飛ばしつつ、1996年には自身のレーベルであるSpiritual Life Musicを設立。同レーベルは、ブレイズ、アフリカン・ジャズ、テン・シティらによるクラブ・クラシックスを数多く生み出し、不動の地位を獲得した。また同年には、フランソワK、ダニー・クリヴィットと共にサンデー・アフタヌーン・パーティーのBody& SOUL をスタート。非常に高いスキルを持つ三人が、バック・トゥ・バックで幅広いジャンルの音楽をミックスするという内容は、画一化が進んでいたニューヨークのハウス・シーンで異彩を放ち、惜しくも休止となった今もなお伝説的なパーティーとして語り継がれている。
1999年には、ギター、フルート、セロ、ヴァイオリンなどといった生楽器をフィーチャーしたソロ名義のアルバム『Language』をリリース。また、Body& SOULの名を冠したミックスCDシリーズや、2枚組140分に及ぶミックスCD『Mix The Vibe: Joe Claussell - Spiritual Journey』を送り出すなど、DJミックス作品も精力的に手掛けている。2006年には、テクノへの接近を見せたミックスCD『Translate』を発表。後半には実験的な無音状態に突入する一幕もあるなど、ジョーらしいスピリチュアルなアプローチが話題を呼んだ。その後も、アームの「Rej」といったヒット曲から、マイルス・デイヴィスの「Bitches Brew」というクラシックスまで幅広いジャンルのリミックスを手掛けており、その精力的な活動は留まることを知らない。
