LOUIE VEGAのプロフィール
ニューヨークはブロンクス出身のDJ/プロデューサー。ラテン・ミュージックをベースにしたソウルフルなハウスを得意とし、ヒップホップをルーツに持つケニー・ドープとのユニットであるマスターズ・アト・ワークや、ニューヨーク生まれのプエルトリカンとしての出自を改めて振り返ったニューヨリカン・ソウルとしての活動でも知られている。ちなみに、叔父はサルサ界を代表するカンタンテのヘクター・ラボ。
デビュー作は、1991年にサルサ・シンガーのマーク・アンソニーとの共作名義でリリースした『When The Night Is Over』。そして翌年には、同作にも参加していたケニー・ドープとのユニット、マスターズ・アト・ワークとして活動を始める。1993年には、同ユニットとしてのデビュー・アルバム『The Album』をリリース。その後も「Are Your Using Me」、「Beautiful People」といったヒット・シングルを次々と送り出し、その名を世に知らしめていった。
1996年には自身のレーベルであるMAW Recordingsを設立。そして翌1997年には、ニューヨーク生まれのプエルトリカンを指す造語“Nuyorican”という言葉を冠したユニット、ニューヨリカン・ソウルとしてアルバム『Nuyorican Soul』を送り出す。そのタイトル通り、自身のルーツを改めて振り返ることをテーマにした同作では、様々なゲスト・ミュージシャンを迎えながら、ジャズ、ラテン、ヒップホップ、ハウスなどをクロスオーヴァーさせた極めてユニークなサウンドを提示。このアルバムの大ヒットによって、彼はその評価を決定的なものへと変えるのであった。
2004年には、初のソロ名義のアルバム『Elements Of Life』をリリース。そして2006年には、カーティス・メイフィールド「Superfly(Louie Vega EOL Mix)」でグラミー賞のベスト・リミックス部門を獲得するなど、その勢いは今も衰えることは知らない。
